The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
~ Rumi ~
MESSAGE FROM REV. KATHLEEN
Sleeping Beauty was one of my favorite childhood fairy tales. It still resonates with me today perhaps because I love to sleep and enjoy a very active dream life, and the leading lady is a brunette like me. (I should also add that I’m married to a prince whose birthday happens to be today!) To be truthful, I sometimes drift off to a waking slumber as a way to avoid, postpone or inhibit something—perhaps my “good” seeking my attention. I got a symbolic wake-up kiss a few years ago that still influences my life today—and makes me laugh every time I think of it.
At a dinner party I found myself seated next to a man who is physical trainer. Oh no, I thought, he’s going to ask me about exercise. Sure enough, the dreaded question came. “So what do you do for exercise?” I smugly replied, “I go to yoga two or three times a week and have for several years.” “Great,” he replied. “What do you do for aerobic exercise?” I cocked my head and sweetly replied, “Well, I use to exercise walk a few times a week, but that was before my hysterectomy.” With a look of concern and compassion, he inquired, “How long ago was your surgery?” After a long pause, I blurted out, “Two years ago.” I howled with laughter as he sat there looking perplexed. What a wake-up call!!! I thanked him profusely for being my spiritual trainer.
Now, when I’m feeling sluggish about something or my good isn’t coming quite quickly enough, I recall this story and laugh. Where have I gone to sleep? What will wake me up? Am I willing to accept the good that is coming? As Rumi said, once spiritually awake, I must not go back to sleep.

Moon Message from Mark Dodich
Full Moon in Leo
Tuesday, February 7
1:54pm(PDT)
The Full Moon is in the polarity signs of Leo and Aquarius (19 degrees Leo). The message is to open your heart and get involved, but do maintain a healthy dose of detachment so you do not get pulled into the drama behavior of others. At this full moon, restrictive Saturn turns retrograde in the final degree of Libra. If you pay attention to subtle indicators, you will get a hint of what is coming next October when Saturn moves into deeply emotional and intense Scorpio. For the next several months, it is wise to restructure all types of relationships as well as to bring your body and world into a higher balance. This is a busy full moon because love & money Venus moves into Aries for the rest of the month. The goddess of beauty helps you pick up the pace if you are willing to explore new opportunities and relationships- especially friendships and organizations in the days ahead.

"Your self image is your pattern! Every thought has an activity visualized. Every activity belongs to pattern.
You identify with your pattern or thought. Your patterns lead your life." J.G. Gallimore
MESSAGE FROM REV. KATHLEEN
My mom was a gifted seamstress, creating art in the form of wedding and bridesmaid dresses, ballet costumes, high end drapes, wardrobes for dolls, and every day school clothes. I recall numerous boxes in our basement filled with patterns. It was great fun to paw through them--McCall's, Simplicity, Butterick, Vogue--and imagine how I might look in a grown up house dress or exotic evening gown. I marveled over how she could translate the designs from the delicate paper onto expensive fabrics. When it came time for me to learn the fine art of sewing in 7th grade home economics, I confess to being a dismal failure. My mind didn't work in patterns, yet I could not stray from the declared order and venture into the unknown of free design. In contrast, my stepdaughter can sew a dress without a pattern. As a child she often took my old 1980s dresses and re-designed them to her liking--without patterns. Her brother recently sewed a wool cape for his sweetie as a Christmas gift, again without using a pattern. My mother was a pattern follower, in sync with the norm. I was a helpless pattern traitor, no longer willing to follow and yet not ready to explore beyond my comfort zone. My stepkids are pattern smashers and explorers, following the beat of their own drums--yet very tapped into universal patterns. In which of the three worlds do you dwell?
As we ease into 2012, a year many have anticipated with dread and many with excitement, my hope is that we together engage in patterns that connect us rather than divide. That we can take the best from the past and release what inhibits us. That we can embrace the in between places with confidence. And that we can trust what is unfolding with joy.

Moon Message from Mark Dodich
Full Moon in Cancer
Sunday, January 8th
11:30pm(PDT)
The Full Moon is on Sunday the 8th at 11:30 PM PST (19 degrees Cancer). This is the moon where you look at the balance of your practical nature and the part of you that wants nurturing. If you are dieting in the new year, you will recognize this as a conflict between your disciplined self and the part of you that wants comfort food. Find a healthy balance between the opposing sides. At the same time, ambitious planet Mars is aligned with the star Denebola in the Leo constellation. Denebola is associated with being on the edge of the establishment, where you see the world through a different lens. Give yourself the opportunity to step away from your "normal" self and go out to the fringe of your comfort zone. Perhaps there is something fresh and new for you to explore that can be brought into your life in the next three months (Mars turns retrograde over this sensitive point on January 23rd and will give you three opportunities to get a fresh view of life- then Mars stimulates you to take action).

Moon Message from Mark Dodich
New Moon in Capricorn
Saturday, December 24, 2011
10:06am(PDT)
The New Moon brings with it a mixed bag of energy, meaning that you will need to take the good with the not so good. Your sun(life force), moon(emotions, family) align with transforming Pluto. You can be in your power if you assert your philosophy in a practical and down to earth way. The challenge is that revolutionary Uranus is impatient and is prepared to blow everything up to get change now. This begins a story that will be with you into 2015 where you balance your practical world needs with inventive, creative and freedom needs. The trick is to let go of old patterns and beliefs, while still holding onto the ones that actually do work in your life (even if they are too slow). Remember that ambitious Mars is starting to slow down now to help you reorganize your life early in 2012, so moving too fast now is only going to make you tired. Know that this is the seed of changes to come through 2015.

December 9, 2011
“It’s hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head.” Sally Kempton, Spiritual Teacher
MESSAGE FROM REV. KATHLEEN
Yesterday was my birthday, gentle and calm, one of the best I’ve experienced in 14 years. (For those of you who have been involved in my various birthday celebrations, do not take this personally.) What allowed this year to unfold differently was remembering that I had previously banished the enemy in my head that had held others hostage, including the weather and Santa Claus. In previous years, I’ve whined and complained about having a birthday so close to Christmas. For years it seemed either I was sick or a key player in my birthday plans was sick. One year everyone cancelled because there was a threat of snow that night. It didn’t snow. That following February we had plans to celebrate my husband’s birthday with a big party at our house. It did snow that day, quite heavily, and the party was cancelled. It was amazing to witness his disappoint. I remember thinking that at last someone knew the angst I have felt on past birthdays. That feeling didn’t last long when Doug said, “Oh, well, we’ll just reschedule for next weekend.” Oh Man, I lit into him like a moth on a street lamp. “Why didn’t my cancelled birthday get rescheduled?” I raged. His reply, which was accurate, “Because it would have been too close to Christmas.” Ah Ha, I remember thinking; no one will ever get my birthday right. I’m destined to suffer every December 8th.
While stewing in my pity pot that year, I pondered: WHAT is this about? I knew it wasn’t about any individual, or sickness, or the weather. What eventually became clear was the reality that I missed my mother on my birthday. She was the queen of birthdays, making me feel extra special every year. Her first words in the morning, either in person or years later by phone, were “Happy Birthday!” The card always arrived either the day before or on my birthday. Her gifts were personal; often something she had created by hand over several weeks. As a kid I got to choose the meal for that night. It was always spaghetti and meatballs. My birthday parties were birthday celebrations, not Christmas parties. And never, ever did I receive a birthday present wrapped in holiday style. It’s noteworthy to point out that my brothers’ birthdays are Nov. 22 and Dec. 3. They too got the special treatment, as did my sister on her February birthday.
My mom died 14 years ago, and with her went the ability for anyone to make me feel as special on my birthday. I had been holding well meaning family and friends hostage—I dare you to try this year! I also believe that I had been holding my mom’s spirit hostage. “Finally you get it,” I heard her whisper. “You are forever special in my eyes, and in the eyes of the Great Mother of Us All. Always, and in All Ways.”
It’s a great time of year to reflect on attachments and stories we have about the holidays, especially those of us with December and January birthdays. What’s blocking your authentic desire to feel and be special? What thoughts are you holding hostage? Are you ready to banish the enemies in your head for an entirely new experience?

Moon Message from Mark Dodich
Full Moon in Gemini + Lunar Eclipse
People on the west coast of the United States and Canada will see the beginning of totality just as the moon disappears below the western horizon.
Friday, December 10, 2011
6:36am (PDT)
The Lunar Eclipse is on December 10th at 6:36 AM PST in Gemini and Sagittarius. It is time to open your mind to new possibilities. Be willing to adapt and adjust because lunar eclipses pull your emotions apart to make room for changing philosophies and priorities. There is a bit of a contradiction in that these zodiac signs are highly social, yet a lunar eclipse asks you to invest in your introspective side. Make time for holiday parties, then go off to your cave to journal profound insights. Write down your ideas and visions now, knowing that a few of them will come forth for practical application next year. Because love & money Venus is tied to restrictive and restructuring Saturn now, so there will be an underlying serious tone below all of the party energy. Some relationships are ending now, and it is important to have a budget for holiday shopping.

“Your self image is your pattern! Every thought has an activity visualized. Every activity belongs to a pattern. You identify with your pattern or thought. Your patterns lead your life.”

MESSAGE FROM REV. KATHLEEN
Recently I heard an acquaintance talk about how different he is from his family of origin. I asked, “Are you the black sheep or rebel?” He paused, thought for a moment, and replied, “No, I’m more like a pattern smasher.” I both chuckled and cringed at his answer. I have smashed a few family patterns over the years, with a certain sense of righteousness. Now I’m more interested in the worn out thoughts I am still running, the ones that are all mine and can’t be blamed on my family of origin.
A pattern of thought I would like to smash has to do with my attachments around the holidays. When I set in motion a list of what I think is going to happen, or should happen, I’m setting myself up for disappointment. (Who was it who said that an attachment is a premature resentment?) I was feeling sad for a few weeks because both of our kids won’t be with us for Thanksgiving this year. According to our blended family rules, it’s our year to have the kids. That’s the agreed upon pattern for the past 17 years. But this year they both have partners and will be spending Thanksgiving with them. I get that on an intellectual level. But my heart felt sad. Allowing myself to just feel that feeling, I became aware—yet again—of a pattern of thought that has dogged me my whole life. It goes something like this: “But I thought…but I thought…but I thought…” Ever found yourself muttering that? I recall hearing, “When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.” So I asked myself, “If I let go of my attachment to how I think this Thanksgiving should unfold, what could emerge?” Ah Ha! I had the inspired idea to suggest we have a pre-Thanksgiving feast on Nov. 20 when all parties could be present. And so we did, having a grand time in the wake of a pattern that was smashed.
In addition to the quote above, Gallimore said, "Once in motion, a pattern tends to stay in motion." Here’s my new pattern. To be fully present wherever I am this holiday season, doing whatever I am doing, and with whom I share company.Gallimore also said, "Image creates desire. You will what you imagine." I imagine a holiday season ahead filled with spontaneous joy. I make right use of my will through fewer attachments, more delights in the moment, and new patterns in motion. The only smashing that happens will take place in a giant bowl of potatoes, filled with butter, garlic and cream. That’s a pattern I am willing to smash with gusto!
What pattern of thought or behavior would you like to smash this holiday season? Join the dialogue at www.anamcaraconections.com under Online Forum.

Moon Message from Mark Dodich
New Moon in Sagittarius
Thursday, November 24, 2011
10:10pm (PDT)
We are now moving into the intensity of eclipse season. It begins with communications planet Mercury moving into its retrograde cycle Nov. 23-Dec. 13. Give yourself extra time when traveling and practice good communications skills for the next several weeks.
The Solar Eclipse is on Nov. 24 at 10:10 PM PST at 3 degrees Sagittarius. A solar eclipse asks you to put aside the busyness of life and refocus your priorities based upon a core, spiritual level. It brings aspects up from the bottom for you to look at. Think of Penn State and Joe Paterno with the uncovering of a child abuse scandal. Sagittarius rules religion and is a fire element sign. Think of the Tibetan monks who have been setting themselves on fire to call attention to the abuse they are receiving from China.
On a personal level, invest some time in your higher aspirations. It is too easy to get caught up in all the things you need to do at this time of year, not to mention the added financial burden that comes during the holidays.
Sagittarius calls you to a higher philosophy, to live in a higher integrity. It is the sign that urges you to take a risk on yourself. Explore something new, or allow some underused part of your soul-personality to find expression. Be willing to take a risk on yourself and step out of your comfort zone.
